Healthcare for a Year-Round Community
Healthcare provision in Didim has expanded significantly over the past decade. As the district's year-round population has steadily grown — driven in particular by international residents and retired permanent residents — both public and private healthcare providers have continued to grow in capacity and service range. Today Didim has broader healthcare provision than most other small districts in Aydın province, though for tertiary (advanced) care patients still rely on referral hospitals in Aydın, Söke or Bodrum.
It helps to think of local healthcare provision along four axes: secondary hospital care (Didim State Hospital), private healthcare (clinics and medical centres), primary care (Family Health Centres) and support services (pharmacies, dental, physiotherapy, opticians, veterinary). In emergencies, an ambulance is summoned via 112 and the patient is, if needed, referred to Söke or Aydın.
Worth knowing: Türkiye's healthcare system is structured in three tiers: primary care (family health centres / GPs), secondary care (state and private hospitals) and tertiary care (teaching and university hospitals). Primary and secondary care are well covered within Didim; for tertiary care the nearest hubs are Söke (~30 min), Aydın (~1.5 hours), Bodrum (~1 hour) and İzmir.
Didim State Hospital: Secondary Care
Didim State Hospital, run by the Ministry of Health, is the district's main healthcare facility. Located in Yenihisar neighbourhood, it provides a broad range of specialities: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Urology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Cardiology and Neurology. Its A&E (acil servis) is open 24/7 and ambulance services cover the whole district — no appointment needed, for a genuine emergency or a same-day urgent problem such as a deep cut, a high fever or a suspected fracture.

The hospital has laboratory, radiology (X-ray, ultrasound, CT/MRI subject to capacity), physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. SGK-covered consultations are free; appointments are booked through the central system MHRS via e-Devlet. For international residents, private health insurance or SGK enrolment matters: visitors without registration are charged a tourist rate.
A useful feature: at the state hospital, the e-Nabız system gives you instant access to all your test results, prescriptions and previous consultations. Annual check-up packages can be arranged through your GP; basic checks under SGK are free.
Private Hospitals & Medical Centres
Didim's private healthcare sector has grown rapidly in recent years. Across the district there are small- to mid-sized private hospitals, medical centres and speciality clinics, most of them concentrated in Yenihisar and Altınkum. The advantages of private facilities: shorter waits for appointments, a wider choice of consultants, and generally more comfortable settings. Egemed and Universay Didim Tıp Merkezi each run their own 24/7 acil servis — open around the clock, no appointment needed, alongside the state hospital's.

Chest pain, severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, a serious accident? Call 112 — the operator or ambulance crew will direct you to the right A&E, state or private. Didim State Hospital, Egemed and Universay Didim Tıp Merkezi all run a 24/7 acil servis; from Seyrantepe and Yeşiltepe each is roughly 10–12 minutes by car (see distances below). For a late-night pharmacy, see tonight's duty pharmacy list.
Private Hospitals
Local private hospital(s) cover the main specialities — general surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, internal medicine — plus orthopaedics, cardiology, ophthalmology, ENT and urology. Some have SGK agreements (with a top-up payment); others work entirely on private insurance or self-pay.
Secondary care · Broad specialitiesPrivate Clinics & Medical Centres
Smaller centres specialising in particular fields. Dermatology / aesthetics, physiotherapy, gynaecology, child development and imaging (MRI/CT) centres are common around Yenihisar. Appointments are booked by phone or online.
Speciality-focused · Quick appointmentsImaging & Laboratory Centres
Independent private imaging centres (ultrasound, MRI, CT) and clinical laboratories operate locally. Tests ordered by any physician can be done here; results are sent by email or via web portals.
Investigations · Fast resultsAesthetics & Hair Transplant Centres
Alongside Didim's tourism economy, aesthetic medicine (Botox, fillers, laser hair removal) and hair-transplant centres have grown. These often serve international residents and tend to be multilingual.
Aesthetics · MultilingualFamily Health Centres (ASM): Primary Care
Family Health Centres (ASM) form Türkiye's primary care tier, serving neighbourhood by neighbourhood. There are more than 10 ASMs across Didim — spread across Yenihisar, Altınkum, Mavişehir, Akbük, Hisar and other neighbourhoods. Every resident is registered with a family physician (GP) assigned by their address.
Services offered at ASMs include: vaccinations (childhood immunisation schedule, flu jab, COVID-19 boosters), antenatal care and infant follow-up, chronic disease monitoring (hypertension, diabetes), repeat prescriptions, family planning, and general consultations. A formal referral from your GP is not required to see a hospital consultant, but it is a sensible first step.
Pharmacies: 40+ in the District
More than 40 pharmacies operate across Didim, spread between Yenihisar, Altınkum, Akbük and Mavişehir, typically open from 09:00 to 19:00. Thanks to the duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) rota, at least one pharmacy is always open overnight and at weekends; the rota is published at nobetcieczane.gov.tr or available by calling 112.
At least one pharmacy in Didim is on duty every night (18:00 - 08:30). The rota changes daily — the links below always open the current day's official list:
Worth knowing for international residents: pharmacies in Türkiye carry the vast majority of prescription medicines. Some medicines available over the counter in the UK or Germany require a prescription here, and vice versa. Pharmacists in Didim are generally comfortable communicating in English and are experienced with international customers.
Dental Care: State and Private
Didim has both an Oral and Dental Health Centre (ADSM) and a number of private dental clinics. The ADSM is SGK-funded and free; appointments are booked via MHRS. Root canal treatment, fillings, extractions and prosthetics are covered; cosmetic dentistry (zirconia, implants, whitening) is typically in the private sector.

Private dental clinics offer internationally competitive care, particularly in implantology and aesthetic dentistry. European "dental tourism" patients regularly visit the town. Thanks to favourable pricing and clinical quality, the sector has grown in recent years, with several clinics open in the town centre.

Specialist support · Online sessionsEmergency Service & the 112 System
In an emergency in Türkiye there is one number to call: 112. The previously separate lines — 155 Police, 156 Gendarmerie, 110 Fire, 158 Coast Guard, 177 Forest Fires and 122 AFAD (Disaster Management) — have all been merged into the 112 Emergency Call Centre. Whatever kind of emergency it is — medical, security, fire, accident — you dial 112 and the centre dispatches the right team.
The 112 operator assesses whether an ambulance is needed; depending on severity, the patient goes either to Didim State Hospital A&E or, where more advanced care is needed, is referred directly to a Söke / Aydın / İzmir reference hospital. A helicopter ambulance service can take off from designated areas in critical cases.
One Emergency Number: 112
All emergency lines have been consolidated under 112. In a real emergency don't hesitate — dial 112; the call goes through even with no mobile signal.
For non-urgent health advice, 184 SABİM (Ministry of Health Communication Centre) is a separate information line; in real emergencies always dial 112.
Additional information for international residents: in addition to Turkish, 112 Emergency Call Centres can handle calls in four foreign languages — English, German, Arabic and Russian. An "Accessible 112" service for deaf and hard-of-hearing users is also available. If you have a known medical condition (allergies, cardiac, diabetes), it is still advisable to wear a medical-alert bracelet and to keep a pre-prepared English-language health summary from your GP.

Practical Info: Appointments & Insurance
MHRS — Central Physician Appointment System: State hospital and ADSM appointments are booked via mhrs.gov.tr or the MHRS Mobile app. An e-Devlet identity is required.
e-Nabız: Your full medical history, tests and prescriptions are viewable in a single dashboard at enabiz.gov.tr. International residents with a Türkiye ID number are also included.
SGK status: Those registered with SGK in Türkiye (as employees or dependents) access services free of charge. International retirees can pay an annual GSS (General Health Insurance) premium to be covered by SGK; alternatively private health insurance is used.
Summer demand: July and August see heavier traffic at both the state hospital and private clinics due to the tourism season. For non-urgent issues, book your appointment in advance. September is among the quietest months.
Referral system: Complex cases that cannot be treated at the state hospital are referred to Söke or Aydın. The referral is arranged by the physician automatically; the patient does not need to file a separate application.
Related guides: For an area overview see our Area Guide; for education, the Education Guide; for social life, the Social Facilities Guide.
Health tip: The most common summer presentations are sunstroke, dehydration and food poisoning. Drink water continuously, reapply sunscreen, and avoid leaving food out in the sun. Your GP and the family health centres can give you these reminders as free preventative consultations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Didim State Hospital adequate?
Yes, for the main healthcare needs (internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics, surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology and so on). For more advanced treatment (cancer care, cardiovascular surgery, transplants) patients are referred to the reference centres in Söke / Aydın / İzmir.
In an emergency, how long does it take to get from Seyrantepe to the hospital?
Twelve minutes by car. When you call 112, the ambulance also reaches you in roughly the same time. In life-threatening situations the 112 operator dispatches the fastest available response.
How does the healthcare system work for international retirees?
There are two main paths: pay the Turkish GSS premium to be covered by SGK, or rely on private health insurance at private hospitals and clinics. At private hospitals with an SGK agreement, SGK applies and the patient pays a top-up.
Are pharmacies open at night?
Yes. Across Türkiye a duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) is always open. The rota can be checked at nobetcieczane.gov.tr, via mobile apps or by calling 112. There is always at least one overnight pharmacy in Yenihisar.
Are dental implants and dental tourism available?
Yes. Didim has private dental clinics that offer internationally competitive care. European residents and visitors use the sector regularly, with pricing well below European levels.
How do I get a repeat prescription for a chronic condition?
Your GP or relevant consultant issues an e-prescription. It is automatically sent to e-Nabız and the pharmacy network. Three-month prescriptions are standard for chronic conditions — you don't need to see the doctor each time.
Do hospitals communicate in English?
At the state hospital, this is limited. Some consultants speak English; at reception, translation help may be needed. Private hospitals and dental clinics tend to offer broader multilingual support because of their European clientele.
